Historically, Echinacea has been used as an antimicrobial to help fight infections, and to treat snake bites, and relieve pain. Originating in North America and employed by indigenous Native Americans, it was used to soothe coughs and sore throats. Traditional healers would also chew on its roots for toothaches and throat infections. Some modern science studies have shown it to be effective in shortening or preventing colds.
Echinacea has been cited to support the immune system, promote respiratory health, benefit digestion and mental well-being/focus; it is a botancial blood purifier and provides support for winter discomforts. It also has anti-inflammatory, adaptogenic, antiseptic, analgesic and antihistamine effects.
