One of the most common mistakes people make while performing the RDL is allowing the spine to go into flexion (bend and round). This means that they are flexing/extending from the lumbar spine instead of from the hips. This often leads to back pain and could potentially cause a significant injury to the muscles of the low back.
If you find that you are having a hard time focusing on hinging from hips and, as a result, are bending from the lumbar spine give this PRO TIP a try!⤵
Hold a dowel rod along the spine. The right hand should hold the dowel rod in the small of the back and the left hand should keep the dowel rod stable along the upper thoracic spine (between the shoulder blades). Utilizing the dowel rod as a corrective exercise provides kinesthetic feedback and helps to keep you from bending the lower back, allowing you to emphasize movement through the hips. 💪
