Insulin is a hormone that allows your body to use glucose for energy. By regulating the metabolism of carbs, fats, and proteins, it helps to balance your blood glucose levels by promoting absorption into the liver, heart, brain, and skeletal muscle cells. If there’s an excessive amount of glucose in your bloodstream, insulin tells your body to store the surplus in your liver. What gets stored in the liver won’t be released until your blood glucose levels drop (i.e. between meals, when the body is under a level of stress, or needs an extra boost of energy.
