Dr.Nick Studholme is a Bio-mechanist and chiropractor that specializes in movement based pain patterns. His bio-mechanics lab includes an instrumented treadmill, IMUs (3-d motion capture sensors that you can place on different body parts), force plates, and high speed cameras, so they are able to capture any aspects of movement they are interested in. They use gait and sports specificity in order to create strategies to change the strength, control, or mobility in those movements.

Dr. Studholme utilizes NOR (Neuro Orthopedic Rehab) assessment and with this data they can identify muscle function in an isolated perspective. Another test they conduct is a muscle testing and they try to correlate the two. They use these tests to understand if there is limited movement or if it is motor pattern dysfunction . There are many different strategies which may include a mobility strategy, a motor pattern strategy, or a strengthening strategy.

A NOR assessment initial evaluation is typically an hour and 45 minutes. They are planning for functional independence and self actualization with the results from the initial evaluation. Dr.Nick Studholme has a full time athletic trainer that works with him and together they go through their bio-mechanical evaluation where they hook up their sensors to the patient. They will have them walk, run, and even possibly jump depending on the task. Then they do a movement exam and a table based exam.

The NOR model has a heavy focus on peripheral nerves and peripheral neurogenic inflammation in the nervous system. Once you have a sensitized peripheral nerve it can mask and mimic multiple things and create inhibition of surrounding tissue, movement avoidance patterns, and mimic conditions that the patient might not actually have. Bio-mechanics is a major component of pain science.
