Acute inflammation is the body’s response to an injury and can be broken down into 2 subphases: Early (Acute) and Late (Sub-Acute). Generally speaking, the Acute Phase lasts about 2-5 days while an inflammatory response that lasts for up to 2 weeks is categorized as the Sub-Acute Phase.

The inflammatory process entices increased blood flow to the area of injury in order to rid the body of the recently damaged cells. This then allows for the formation of new collagen. Pain, swelling, tenderness, and warmth may accompany the early stages of the inflammatory process and are therefore totally normal occurrences.

The focus of treatment during the acute phase is to first decrease swelling in order to reduce pain. It is also pertinent to maintain the strength and functionality of the adjacent areas. Ultimately, the overarching goal is to prevent the disruption of new tissue development.
