Here’s some facts about the rectus femoris:

  • One of the 4 quadriceps muscles, located in the middle of the front of the thigh
  • Attaches from the pelvis to the patellar tendon (just below the knee joint) and is responsible for knee extension and hip flexion
  • Innervated by the femoral nerve
  • Overuse/overtraining could lead to a strain which may cause a pain to radiate into the groin. Pain may also be felt when walking down stairs or attempting to fully extend the knee.

Synergist muscles for the rectus femoris include:

  • Glute max
  • Piriformis
  • Obturator externus
  • Obturator internus
  • Superior gemelli and inferior gemelli
