Here’s some facts about the rectus femoris:
- One of the 4 quadriceps muscles, located in the middle of the front of the thigh
- Attaches from the pelvis to the patellar tendon (just below the knee joint) and is responsible for knee extension and hip flexion
- Innervated by the femoral nerve
- Overuse/overtraining could lead to a strain which may cause a pain to radiate into the groin. Pain may also be felt when walking down stairs or attempting to fully extend the knee.
Synergist muscles for the rectus femoris include:
- Glute max
- Piriformis
- Obturator externus
- Obturator internus
- Superior gemelli and inferior gemelli
