The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is the joint between the skull and the mandible aka “the jaw bone”. It allows the jaw to open and close as well as move side to side.
TMJ dysfunction (or TMJD) occurs when the articular disc of the TMJ doesn’t track properly with the movement of the jawbone causing the area of the joint to become inflamed. TMJ dysfunction can cause pain or tenderness in the jaw, face, neck and shoulders, and in and around the ear. It can also be the cause of tension headaches as well. Since this can affect the surrounding soft tissue, ACUPUNCTURE and MASSAGE THERAPY are both effective sources of treatment. Healing can also be aided with diligent self-care and the proactive practice of stress-relief techniques.
